Personality quirks

Meet Silver!  A beautiful gray and white tabby, about 8 months old, given a clean bill of health (combo test all negative) and up to date on vaccines.

He is a big cuddle bug with a hefty dose of awesome personality, and as a young cat he’s very energetic and playful. Silver does not like dogs and is quickly learning to get along with our resident cats - with proper introduction he would be a great addition to a family who wants a companion for their cat.  He would do best in a quiet home where he and one other cat are the focus of attention. He can be left alone when you’re at work and will wait patiently at home for you to come play and cuddle with him.

He likes to give kisses, lick your hand and shows affection with “love bites”, a gentle bite that some cats exhibit when they really really love you.

As most of the cats who arrive at the Sanctuary, Silver was abandoned on the street, yet his past has not tainted the sweet and trusting personality he’s shown while in our care and he deserves to be in a quiet home that will show him the affection, attention and love he so desperately craves.

Personality quirks:

Meet Treat! He’s a beautiful 2-year-old tuxedo who is a former colony cat, coming in from the cold! He decided that life indoors is far better, and while he’s a bit skittish and shy, he’s loving the attention, and the belly rubs he’s been acquiring lately.

He is best suited for a quiet home that has no dogs, but is fine with cats, and is willing to give him the time to adjust and show his true colors. Treat wouldn’t mind a porch to spend time on, but he’s not interested in outdoor life and prefers sitting and watching the squirrels and birds from the safety of his sheltered new life.

Who can resist this face?!

Luna looking down on her kingdom

Luna and friends

her super cute toes!

Meet Luna! A playful cat who prefers to be around people/pets instead of alone. She loves all the assorted cat games, or just sitting with someone chilling on the couch, and she will even play "chase" with her foster's medium-sized dog. She gets along with all the cats, dogs, and people she's met so far. She is also a polydactyl cat, so has extra toe beans on her rear feet. How's that for being cool?

Luna is 3 years old, spayed and up to date on all her vaccines. She's looking for a new home due to circumstances beyond her control and would make a wonderful addition to anyone looking to add a playful and super friendly member to their fur family.

UPDATE: Adopted 🥰

ADOPTED!

Frejya was found in someone's backyard, and the good Samaritan brought her and her sister Callie to BHS.  While Callie has been adopted, Frejya is still waiting for her perfect forever home. Frejya is very loving, likes to "groom" you, and can be a chatter box. She gets along with other cats, but does not mind being your only child.  She is about 1 year old, spayed and up to date on vaccines. She would love to sit and watch TV, play or just listen to you tell her about your day.  Applications now accepted for this beautiful silver princess. 😻

ADOPTED!

Little Lucky and her brother Luke were found behind a feed store in Chuluota, hungry, cold and orphaned. But look at them now! The two little ones will be available for adoption soon, so be sure to turn in your application before they are scooped up!

These two have been through a lot together as orphans and due to Lucky being so tiny and having to stay longer at BHS in order to gain her strength and have the best chance to grow big and strong, she and Luke are bonded and will only be adopted out as a pair.  While many kittens spend time together in foster care and do great when adopted away from their group, sometimes the unique situation of two tiny orphans such as Luke and Lucky mean the two kittens, who in this case happen to be brother and sister, bond and separating them would not be in the best interest of their future and well-being.

And why would you not want them both? Watching them play, snuggle and grow up together is as tempting as these two are precious 🥰f

UPDATE: Luke and Lucky are adopted and no longer available

Lucky and Luke's first experience with catnip 😂

Lucky

Luck be a Lady! And boy is this girl a Lady!

Lucky has come a long way; she's growing stronger every day and is a bundle of energy and sass as she walks around with her tail held high! While smaller than her brother Luke, her coat is a brown tabby with a "platinum" undercoat, making her look splendid 😍

Luke

Lucky's brother Luke, is a big cuddle bug, and while bigger than his litter sister Lucky, who is catching up with him fast, is also a brown tabby, but with a "golden" undercoat, making him look regal.  And all this little prince wants to do is sit in your lap, offer his belly for rubs and purr purr purr🥰

ADOPTED!

Mason

Mason is our latest arrival here at BHS (arrived 1/5/2024) and while she's still being vetted and not quite ready for adoption, we still want to brag a little about this beautiful angel who went through quite a terrible ordeal just before the New Year.

Mason was found with a mason jar (yes, hence her name) stuck on her head! Can you imagine?? A good Samaritan who feeds the colony where she comes from spent several days trying to catch her, and once she was in their care, they rushed her to the emergency veterinarian to get the jar off her head. After a few days of recovering, Mason was spayed and vaccinated and brought into our care to be fostered.

She is sweet, calm and has a great appetite, and at 17 weeks old, we will work with patience and love to help this little girl find the self-confidence and trust to overcome a terrible start to her life, while looking with hope to a future full of happiness and joy for her.

Stay tuned!

PAST ADOPTIONS

Leonardo da Vinci

😍ADOPTED! 😍

This little boy is a work of art! While a bit shy at first, he's curious, playful and perfect for a home that has an older cat who won't mind taking this little artist under their wing! 🤩

😍ADOPTED!😍

This handsome tuxedo was found roaming an Oviedo neighborhood in early November 2023.  After putting up flyers and information online about him, nobody came to claim the poor guy.

The good Samaritan, out of concern for shelters and rescues being at capacity, found us and we drove out to see what we could do.  Maverick turned out to be quite the lovebug, so it was easy coaxing him into the carrier and whisk him off to the vet for a checkup. It turns out Maverick was already neutered, deemed to be about 2 years old, but had no microchip.  Whoever had made the right decision to have him neutered, unfortunately didn't take that extra step to have him micro chipped.  Whether Maverick got lost, got dumped, or was abandoned when his people moved (sadly that happens more often than people realize), didn't matter to us in the end. We scooped him up and are confident we will find the perfect home for this big boy, one that will cherish him and never abandon him.

Maverick wants to be your one and only - he needs all your attention focused on him, as he chatters, tells you about his day, and wants to know about yours. He's a big cuddle bug who wants to sit and watch TV, or snuggle on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa this winter. He is not interested in sharing a home with any other cat or dog, but absolutely loves people and getting their attention. He is fine being alone while you're at work and will greet you when you come home with a swaying tail and head bumps. This boy has swagger! 😍

😍Maverick was adopted ❄️Christmas week 🌲by a wonderful, retired gentleman who recently lost his tuxedo cat (passed at old age), who also had been a rescue. We so greatly appreciate our adopters who help us give these deserving felines a permanent home, offering safety, comfort and love. 😍

Bellini is a beautiful long-haired tuxedo lady, about 1 year old, who gave birth twice before her first birthday! While her babies were adopted long ago, this lovely feline is still waiting for her turn to be someone's center of attention and #1 cuddle partner.  Bellini, while being born into a cat colony outdoors, is very well adjusted to indoor life, and never looked back. She's OK with other cats, although wouldn't mind the least being your one and only. Contact BHS directly for adoption application and inquiries.

Update: Bellini has become a permanent BHS resident and no longer available - she has bonded with us and several resident felines and it would be unfair to take her out of her home especially given her background and what she has been through. While our mission is to ultimately adopt all our foster cats, sometimes circumstances take a different turn, and our focus and number one priority is to always do what is in the best interest of our cats.

We are so happy to have her!

The Purrfect Christmas Gift

Sometimes, the best Christmas is one that includes the compassionate and joyful act of adopting a kitten or adult cat, adding a new member to the family and enjoying the "gift" for many, many years to come.

However, making a feline companion a Christmas gift, no matter how wonderful and precious that is, it is also very important that you consider a few items before embarking on the adoption process with the intention of making this a gift:

Does the receiver want/expect a kitten/feline companion?

It's extremely important that the receiver of your gift is actively looking for or wishing for a new family member.

Is the receiver prepared to welcome this new feline into their life?

While a cat tree, food bowls, litter box and food are obviously important in preparation for the new family member, of equal or perhaps greater importance is to be prepared for the financial responsibilities, which will likely include follow up vaccinations, regular veterinary visits and later in life, potential health issues that may require medications and/or surgeries. The new adopter should have considered this and be financially ready to take on this responsibility.

Does the gift receiver's living arrangements allow for a feline companion animal?

This is especially important to consider if the intended recipient of this precious gift is renting. Many landlords will require a pet deposit, and some may not even allow pets at all. Be sure you know what the situation is so that there are no unfortunate surprises.

Is the gift receiver ready for a new furry family member?

Even if someone may have expressed a desire to adopt a little furry bundle of energy, you should keep in mind that people who are students/in school, working on transitioning from one city or state to another, who may have room mates, or who may generally not be living in a situation where a companion animal makes sense right now, may not really be ready for such a wonderful gift.

OK, so now that I've basically ruined the element of surprise for you, what should you do if you know someone would really love a new kitten, and is definitely ready for one?

Offer to take them to one of our adoption events and pay for the adoption fee. This way, you and the new adopter know that the new kitten is welcome, wanted and ready for his/her new life in their furever home 🥰
